Renovations strategies

The renovation strategies consist of two approaches. These are the TOP DOWN and the BOTTOM UP principle. The TOP DOWN approach mainly addresses the owners, authorities, teachers, pupils, parents and general public; whereas the BOTTOM UP approach is more addressed to technical professionals, planers and industry.

Based on the experience of a former research project dealing with modular prefabricated facade elements for the renovation of multifamily houses, solutions for the renovation of school buildings have been developed further. Some essential differences in school buildings are e.g. the occupation density in the rooms, other usage patterns, different typical static building structures or impact on architectural design. The modular prefabricated façade elements for renovation include e.g. concepts for the integration of fresh air supply by mechanical ventilation systems, shading or automated window ventilation, control lines or electric power supply. This requires that the building envelope has to be fixed from outside and covers the existing façade. Depending on the structure of the existing building, the implementation of façade integrated fresh air supply follows mainly two possible solutions: centralised ventilation units with façade integrated ductwork or decentralised façade integrated ventilation units. The process of finding appropriate solutions for an individual existing building is supported by a qualitative typological analysis of the existing building stock and concluding advices based on this analysis and the theoretical application of the renovation modules.

Concepts for a modular prefabricated renovation of school buildings with integrated ventilation solution have been developed. A typological analysis helps to find the appropriate solution for an individual existing building. A combined dwelling and school building has been renovated with prefabricated modules with integrated ventilation solution in 2011 to Minergie-P standard and shows one successful implementation of the façade integrated ductwork.
