Developments in energy, social, and education policies call for adaptations of school buildings. Holistic renovation strategies must consider school buildings as a system, including energy supply, ventilation, and cooling as well as thermal comfort. These strategies aim to adapt the buildings and make them “fit“ to current and future requirements.
The Project aims at transferring knowledge gained on renovation strategies with prefabricated retrofit modules for residential buildings to school buildings, and additionally developing value adding renovation strategies with a high multiplication potential.
This contribution is based on the workpackage «WP2 Building Typology» sub-project of the ERACOBUILD project «School vent cool - Ventilation, cooling, and strategies for high performance school renovations». It transfers knowledge gained on typology and prefabrication in the IEA project Annex 50 to school buildings.
The basis of the typological investigation is a qualitative analysis of school buildings carried out with help by the partner countries (Belgium, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland) participating in the «School vent cool» project. They submitted building dossiers consisting of plans, photographs, and other data.
These case study buildings were investigated on characteristics relevant to prefabrication, and recorded in the following focus areas: school complex, school building, classroom and building technology. This information will provide the following key results:
· documentation of the case study buildings
· typological analysis of the case studies regarding use, construction, energy consumption, design, and morphology
· guidelines for the technical development of prefabricated façade modules, and the optimisation of the construction processes
· overview of the investigated school buildings assigned to general types
· overview of the investigated school building elements assigned to focus types, leading to considerably reduced complexity
The typology developed in this project relates to renovation strategies for prefabrication. It includes guidelines for prefabricated façade and roof modules as well as layouts of building service systems.
