Developments in energy, social, and education policies call for adaptations of school buildings. Holistic renovation strategies must consider school buildings as a system, including energy supply, ventilation, and cooling as well as thermal comfort. These strategies aim to adapt the buildings and make them “fit“ to current and future requirements.
The Project aims at transferring knowledge gained on renovation strategies with prefabricated retrofit modules for residential buildings to school buildings, and additionally developing value adding renovation strategies with a high multiplication potential.
This contribution is based on the workpackage WP2 Building Typology. It transfers knowledge gained on typology and prefabrication in the IEA project Annex 50 to school buildings.
The basis of the typological investigation is a qualitative analysis of school buildings carried out with help by the partner countries (Belgium, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland) participating in the «School vent cool» project. They submitted building dossiers consisting of plans, photographs, and other data.
The typological analysis of the case study buildings includes characteristics of use, construction, energy consumption, design, and morphology that are relevant to prefabrication. The findings are recorded in focus areas.
The qualitative typology provides an overview of the school building stock, and allows developing general strategies for renovation with prefabricated modules. In addition, it helps reducing complexity of decisions in renovation. From each individual renovation, focus areas can be singled out, (e.g. building system engineering) leading to a manageable number of alternatives.
Building typology reduces complexity by grouping the essential characteristics of a specific planning problem to types, and providing illustrated examples as references. The typology developed in this project focuses on renovation strategies with prefabricated modules. It includes guidelines for prefabricated facade modules as well as layouts of building service systems.
